How long between two times?
Work out the gap between a start and end time — for a shift, a workout, a study session or a journey. The tool shows the duration in hours and minutes, the total minutes, and decimal hours for timesheets. Overnight spans are handled automatically.
How it works
So 9:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes (8.5 decimal hours), and 22:00 to 06:15 counts as 8 hours 15 minutes across midnight.

A worked example
A shift from 9:15 to 17:45 is 8 hours and 30 minutes. The tool subtracts the start from the end and expresses the gap in hours and minutes, handling the tricky part for you: if the end time is earlier than the start — say 22:30 to 06:00 — it correctly rolls past midnight and returns 7 hours 30 minutes rather than a negative number.
Timesheets, shifts and everyday timing
Working out elapsed time comes up with work shifts, study or focus sessions, cooking and baking, parking, and travel legs. It's the quick answer to "how long was that?" without counting on your fingers across the hour or the midnight boundary.
Adding up a whole week of shifts with breaks and overtime? The time card calculator is built for that. If your two times are in different regions, convert them first with the time zone converter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the time between two times?
Subtract the start time from the end time. If the end is earlier than the start, the span crosses midnight, so add 24 hours. This tool handles that automatically and shows hours and minutes.
Does it handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If the end time is before the start time, it assumes the period runs past midnight into the next day and counts the hours correctly.
What are decimal hours?
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour — for example 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 decimal hours. It's the format used for timesheets and billing.
